Does anybody smell gas?

Chase and Hillary Bell, on the Lituya, stopped by the bay not too long ago.  We see these two once or twice a year and it's always fun to catch up and hear about their travels.  They were on their way back from delivering propane to a big residence in Hood Bay, so they topped up almost all of our propane tanks here at the lodge.  Our tanks took so much fuel that we ran the Lituya's tank dry!
Hillary sunning herself on the bow!

We were able to bring the propane hose up the boardwalk and fill the tanks on the deck this year--that saved wrestling the 170 pound (when full) tanks up the ramp from the dock the way we did last time.
Chase seems happy to get started filling!
As each tank was filled Jen and I would put it on a dolly and wheel it back to the propane farm.  We got all the tanks back where they belong just before it started snowing that day!

Recent Wildlife

It's uncommon for Orca to come into Warm Springs Bay, so it was really a treat a few weeks ago when a pod of six whales came in and swam right up to the waterfall.  I had just gotten back from hiking up to Baranof Lake when Jen came flying out of the door with her cameras.  "Killer Whales!" she blurted, and there they were, right in front of the lodge.  We watched them head out of the bay and then decided to follow them for a while in the skiff.  In the outer part of the bay they started getting active.  We were quite a ways away, but suddenly we saw a huge splash, and then many more splashes, tail slaps, and roiling water.  We're pretty sure they caught a steller sea lion!

 Cruising through the bay.

Spy Hop!  That is a Common Loon swimming away as fast as it can, and a gull surveying from above.

Looking for sea lions!

They found one!  This steller sea lion is having a very bad day.  She already has a gash on the side of her head and shortly after this she and the orca disappeared from our sight.  The sea lion appears to have been trying to reach the rocks just about 100 yards to the left side of this photo.

These are the rocks that we think the sea lion was heading for, and it appears she may have become dinner for the whales.  There was a lot more splashing, thrashing and tail slaps right up next to this wall.  We never saw the sea lion again......This whale really got some height while tail lobbing!

Jen waiting for the next appearance.

Ironically, there was a dead sea lion drifting around in the tide rips. You can see that someone made a meal of his now missing head, lower right.  Jen was sorry the orca didn't dine on this guy instead.

We also found a nice log for firewood that somebody insisted absolutely must come back with us!

Bay selfie.....entirely too close for my comfort!

Home Sweet Home!

Toni (Great Blue Heron) on one of her favorite roosts.

Toni on the same roost on a windy day.  Look at that expression!  Notice she had both legs down for support, instead of her usual one-legged stance.  The winds were gusting to 30 knots in the bay that day, and some gusts really challenged Toni!

Toni back on the eagle tree after our first snowfall.

This gull pulled a little cutthroat trout out of Sadie Creek at high tide.  It took him a few minutes before he could finally wrangle the fish down his gullet!

This squirrel has been busy with the burlap bag for days--probably insulating his nest.

A rare Tiger of the North!!  She heard about the squirrel, so is hustling over to check it out.

Thanksgiving

We had a great turkey dinner on Thanksgiving.  Andy and Elsa, two of our neighbors who live at the town site (about half a mile away) joined us for turkey, stuffing, mashed potatoes, sweet potatos, fresh egg bread, and way too many chocolate deserts!  Unfortunately, we didn't get any photos from dinner (a very rare event around Jen), but a good time was had by all!

Six turkeys are better than one!

After (with a batch of bonus brownies to boot!)

We've had such a busy schedule we've only been out kayaking once!

No way to paddle up the falls, so sometime we'll have to carry a kayak up and try it coming down.
Feral cheering as the Seahawks start their comeback!

 She's also a big Husky Fan--Go Dawgs!
"What's this I hear about tailgating?"
Jennifer demonstrating how not to rinse a sharp butcher knife.  Evidently the key is to take a big slice out of your finger so you can get blood all over!  It seems to be healing and we think she'll be able to use the finger sometime next year!

Snow at Last!

Warm Springs Bay is known as a local snow hole with much more snow than most of the surrounding areas.  We didn't actually think we wouldn't get any snow this year, but we checked the weather logs and verified that we had never gone so far into winter without snow here at the lodge.  But last Saturday night (November 29th), the snow finally started to come down!  It snowed on and off for about 36 hours and we ended up with ten inches of heavy, wet snow to clear.  That's not much by Baranof standards (our big snow year was 37 feet and I've heard reports of 50 foot snow winters in the old days).  But it's a start and it made Jennifer very happy!

Here's the lodge early in the snowfall.

Sunday afternoon the skies cleared and we had some beautiful light to show off the snow.  Notice I didn't say sunlight as the sun didn't come over the mountains.

Somehow the lights just seem to go with snow....

We had trouble with the satellite internet and TV until I figured out that snow covered branches had dropped down in front of the dishes.  Once I shook the snow off the tree, the branches went back to their normal heights and service was restored!  That only took a day to figure out....

The snowblower got it's first workout of the season and performed flawlessly!

The snow took its time shedding off the roof, so we had to clear several different times.

November Happenings or lack thereof......

There hasn't been a whole lot happening here at the lodge in November.  The weather pattern that gave the lower 48 such a winter blast has given us our warmest, mildest fall we can remember.  We did have a short week of freezing temperatures and cold, clear skies but so far no snow, very few gales, and even the rain has moderated.

Below are some random photos from November.

Toni, our resident great blue heron standing guard over a flock of Barrow's Goldeneye (with one token surf scoter bringing up the rear).

Toni has several favorite perches--this one is at the top of an old snag at the water's edge.

 Morning Yoga
Here's another shot of October's bear messing with some bones on the beach.  We saw him or signs of him every day for about a week, then he moved on.

We did get a good supply of firewood laid in.  We (editorial "we") get logs off the beach and tow them back to the lodge.  At high tide, we can pull them up pretty close to our wood shed.

The fun part is cutting the logs into rounds, splitting and stacking.

A peavey is pretty helpful when it comes to manipulating a big heavy log!

The end result.  It's hard to get the whole woodshed into a single frame--there is probably 1/3 of the covered woodshed in the photo.  We then stack wood on pallets alongside the woodshed and cover it with tarps.

Jen flew out for a short trip to Seattle.  Harris Air picked her up in the floatplane, and she was excited to sit in the front, playing co-pilot with her wild and crazy hair.

Approaching Sitka's runway in a DeHavilland Beaver with amphibious floats.  This allowed Rob to pick Jen up at our dock on the water in Warm Springs Bay and land on the runway at the airport.

Landing in Sitka--sort of like a carrier landing!

From rainy Sitka Jen took the jet down to sunny Seattle, where she went to the Husky/UCLA game with Beverli, her childhood friend from L.A, and her husband Steve.

We won't talk about the results of the game, but it was a nice evening for football at Husky Stadium.  Looks like the visiting team fans get seats that Bob Uecker would kill for!

This is the Beaver that Harris Air flies, and you can see Mt. Edgecumbe peeking out behind.

Jen flew back to the lodge on one of our rare beautiful sunny days!

Feral loves having her own private wilderness to explore.

All of the grass on the beach has been properly subdued.  Almost.

Practicing her Jack Nicholson "Shining" expression.

Feral giving her menu approval (although this lettuce got a paw down).

We did take advantage of the dry stretch of weather we had to get a head start on putting our lights up.  So far we've got 20 boxes of regular lights and 16 boxes of icicle lights up.
The joys of putting lights up on a metal roof with a really steep pitch!  (That's why we did it when it was dry--the snow and rain make it much harder!)

Did I mention that the pitch is really steep?
